Johnny

It all started in 1974. There are two obvious explanations: first is that he was dropped to Earth by UFOs or a less colourful theory is that he is a love-child of two great people. ‘Good morning Father, what’s up in the vineyard?’ These were the first words of little Johnny. It was clearly visible at this stage that he is going to be a winemaker or more precisely a oenologist.

Soon he created his first wine. He was only 4 at that time.

Now he’s over 40 and still couldn’t find a better past-time than wine making. Thanks for his parents or the UFOs.

Seriously though…

The winemaker is called Jani Bolyki. He started dealing with wines after his graduation from the College of Light Industry majoring in leather goods. He is a first generation winemaker in Eger. Although his parents owned some land where they had been cultivating grapes but mainly to have a hand on some extra cash by selling the grapes.

After the changes in the political system in the 1990s people were re-compensated with piece of lands and this was a great opportunity to establish the estate. As a first step he planted grapes on 11 hectares on Öreghegy. As a freshly graduated light industry engineer he was good with numbers. According to his calculation he had planned to produce 150 tons grapes and use the income to spend time snowboarding in France from October till the pruning season. However, after the first vintage in 2002 he decided to purchase more land and make wines, so snowboarding remained only a dream, but this is how the 27 hectares Bolyki Estate was born.

“Jó reggelt, édesapám, mi újság a szőlőben?”
